Top manways - construction and application

Top manways is a conventional term for a category of stainless steel manholes, which are installed in the roof (upper part) of tanks. This group primarily includes round manways of various diameters. It also includes various types of rectangular and oval manways.

 

Typically, manways installed in the upper part of a stainless steel tanks open outwards. For this purpose, it’s necessary to remove or lift the cover. Manway covers are secured with handwheels or clamp closures. Some models or versions of top (upper) manways are equipped with a dedicated hinge with a movable pin, the design of which allows the cover to be pushed aside.

 

In addition, manway covers are often equipped with a handle to facilitate its lifting. The main advantage of upper manways is also the high availability of mounting frames (up to 1000 mm height). This element proves very useful when the tank is covered with a thick layer of thermal insulation (insulated tanks). The upper manway category includes both non-pressure models and PED pressure manways.
