Characteristics of manways for installation in concrete bases

Manways for installation in concrete (cement) tanks are a specific group of manways with very wide range of applications. They are usually equipped with a special frame to allow proper installation of the manway in the tank.

Installing a manway in a concrete tank is usually carried out in one of two ways:

by external installation of the manway with bolts,
by embedding part of the the manway (frame) in the concrete base.

Stainless steel manways for concrete and cement tanks

A concrete manway is usually equipped with a special design element to allow for proper installation:

frame – a profiled frame edge with a special groove around the perimeter of the manway, allowing it to be embedded in the tank wall,
symmetrical, equally spaced protrusions around the perimeter of the manway frame (approximately 1 cm wide) to allow for concrete pouring,
wide frame with holes for anchoring with bolts.

Shapes and dimensions of manways for concrete/cement tanks

The most common shapes of manways for installation in concrete/cement tanks are round and rectangular versions.

Rectangular manways for concrete/cement tanks are usually large-size designs. Common dimensions among these types of manways: 500x800 mm, 600x800 mm, 530x406 mm or 800x1000 mm. They are equipped with a minimum of 2 handwheels for lid locking.

Round manways for installation in a concrete base are also designs with larger diameters. By default, the minimum available option for round concrete manways is DN490. Other popular dimensions are: DN600, DN800, DN1000, DN1200 and DN1400.

Manways for installation in concrete – applications

Manways mounted in the concrete base are an important element that allows access to the interior and maintenance of tanks in multiple industries. They are, therefore, used:

in the food industry (both as a manway for tanks for finished products and for production waste),
in biotechnology (inspection manways for reactors with low operating pressures),
in agriculture (manways for underground tanks for various purposes).

It is important to note that concrete manways are not construction manways. Their default purpose is for installation in freestanding, non-pressurized tanks used primarily in the food industry and related areas. The use of manways in construction, hydro-engineering and similar industries, must follow the opinion of the design engineer and involve the approval and responsibility of the investor.
